On December 23, 1791, Empress Catherine of Russia
issued a decree restricting Jewish habitation to specific areas.
This decree applied to White Russia (Byelorussia), the
Ukraine and other areas taken in the partition. After the Third Partition, the decree was extended to include the newly
acquired territories along the Baltic Sea. Thus was born the
Pale of Settlement, the area where Jews were allowed to live;
an area that stretched from the Baltic to the Black Seas.
Of the areas then inhabited by Lithuanian Jewry, ethnic
Lithuania and Byelorussia became an integral part of Russia
and the southerm part, around Grodno and Suwalk, became
part of the Duchy of Warsaw (Poland). Although Lithuania
may have been divided, the Jewish Litvak community
remained integrated until World War I.
It has been estimated that, at the time of partition, 25 percent of all the Jews of easterm Europe were Litvak

Gene was also involved with the book: Bringing the Past to Life, Part II, Hirshhorn/Friedlander Families Revisited. From DeAar, South Africa. A Kahala link at: JewishGen. https://kehilalinks.jewishgen.org/de_aar/Bringing_Past.html. Yes, I have several Friedlanders matching my DNA as 4th cousins.
My genealogy work was checked by another distant cousin, Gene Lepere, author her autobiography, of NEVER PASS THIS WAY AGAIN. Gene was the daughter of art collector, Joseph Hirshhorn, and worked as a marketing consultant. She lived in Los Angeles. So we're connected to her family. My brother and cousin Sandra match Donald, one of the male Hirshhorns. Gene led an amazing life. I used Jewishgen for much of my work.
The Shabbat Dinner Get-together: Ian drove down from Houston to Austin to meet us and that's a LONG distance. Texas is huge.

Early Wars Causing Lithuanian Jews to Flee to Ukraine
Nadene Goldfoot
In 1432 -1438 there was war in Lithuania. It was Lithuania and Poland against Russia.
From 1487-1494 a 2nd war was fought; the Lithuanian Muscovite War of Lithuania, the Golden Horde against Moscow.
From 1492-1537, the war raged on as the Muscovite-Lithuanian wars of Lithuania and Moscow. (1492 when Columbus sailed the ocean blue) and Jews had to leave Spain, start moving all over trying to find a home...
By 1495, Jews were living in Vilna, Grodno and Kovno totaling 10,000.
1508 was the Glinski Rebellion against Lithuania by Glinski supporters
1524 was the big Ottoman-Tartar invasion of Lithuania and Poland
1561to 1570 was the Northern 7 Years War of Lithuania/Poland against Sweden
They received a charter in 1529 guaranteeing freedom of movement and employment. Soon they were the leading workers in foreign trade and taxing and farming. However, from 1495-1502, the first 7 years of being in Lithuania, they were excluded FROM Lithuania. In 1566-1572, the Jewish badge was introduced for Jews to wear to distinguish themselves from citizens. Jews were disqualified in the court system for giving evidence.
1576 to 1582 was the Livonian War of everyone (Lithuania/Poland/Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Transylvania); being against Tsardom of Russia
1600-1629 was again the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth and Swedish War and 1605-1618 included war against Russia and 1606 -1608 the Zebrzydowski Rebellion of nobles against the king.
Organization took place. Jews were represented in the COUNCIL OF THE FOUR (then 5) LANDS, but that wasn't helping, so the Jews formed a separate COUNCIL OF LITHUANIA in 1623 when a separate tax-system was established.
Catherine II in the 1780'sBy 1762, Catherine II permitted all aliens to live in Russia, except Jews. Partitions of Poland, resulting from wars, took place in 1772, 1793, and 1795, when the large group of White Russian Jews, Ukraine, Lithuania and Courland became Russian subjects. For more than a century, they were all under the reactionary rule of the Czars.
Lithuania became part of Russia in 1795 which lasted until WWI of 1918. It had become a major part of the Jewish culture so was most important. It was the home of distinguished yeshivote (Jewish schools) and leading rabbis such as the Gaon of Vilna. It became the seat of MUSAR movement, and a center of Haskalah.
During World War I, 100,000 Jews were expelled or actually emigrated to the Russian interior, leaving their shtetles. In independent Lithuania, Jews received national autonomy from 1918- 1924. A Jewish National Council was established under a Ministry for Jewish Affairs. They had the right to levy taxation under government auspices.
Polish forces stops Austrian advance at Raszyn, only to retreat to the other side of the river soon afterwards.
The Austro-Polish War or Polish-Austrian War was a part of the War of the Fifth Coalition in 14 April 1809 (a coalition of the Austrian Empire and the United Kingdom against Napoleon's French Empire and Bavaria). It ended October 14, 1809. It lasted 6 months.
Gaon of Vilna, Rabbi Eleazar
Vilna, the largest city as well as capital, was lost to Poland in 1919, the result of WWI. This weakened the Jews of Vilna. After 1924, autonomy was restricted solely to religious matters, while the economic position of the Jews deteriorated in the oncoming years.
No Jews survived the expulsion of Jews of 1290 when Jews were also expulsed from England. A few former Marranos settled in Dublin after 1660 and more arrived as military purveyors after the 1689 revolution. Original Jews were displaced by Ashkenazim, but by 18th century, population declined and by 1816 there were only 3 Jewish families in Dublin and a few in other Irish towns. They were joined by others in 1822 and the population was 400 by 1880. Emigration from Eastern Europe took place at the end of the 19th century and many went to Dublin, Cork, Waterford, Limerick, Belfast. the chief rabbinate was founded in 1918 being Yitzhak Halevi Herzog with the Jewish population in 1990 at 1,600, mainly in Dublin,
Many Jews of Lithuania moved on to Dublin, Ireland and from there, to South Africa which Jews started settling in the early 19th century. Capetown had a synagogue by 1841. The settlers were traders and peddlers who traveled among the Boer farmers. Later they went to the towns. Gold was discovered there in the end of the 19th century, which eastern European Jews which drew many. Johannesburg became the main Jewish settlement, and they enjoyed the political equality in Cape Colony and Natal, but obtained it in the Transvaal only after the 2nd Boer War. Immigration to South Africa was popular following WWI and came mostly from Lithuania.
I know that Simon Goldfoot moved from Lithuania to South Africa in the 20's. His son, Stanley Goldfoot b: May 2, 1914, was born there in Houghton, Johannesburg, South Africa. Immediately after graduation high school, he made Aliyah to Palestine, and he lived in Jerusalem, becoming the Chief of Intelligence for the Stern Group which the British called the Stern Gang.
Polish–Lithuanian Conflict) was an undeclared war between newly independent Lithuania and Poland following World War I, which happened mainly, but not only, in the Vilnius and Suwałki regions. The war is viewed differently by the respective sides. According to Lithuanian historians, it was part of the Lithuanian Wars of Independence and lasted from May 1919 to 29 November 1920. Polish historians deem the Polish–Lithuanian war as occurring only in September–October 1920. Since the spring of 1920, the conflict became part of the wider Polish–Soviet War and was largely shaped by its progress. It was subject to international mediation at the Conference of Ambassadors and the League of Nations.
Though most emigration from Lithuania went to Israel, it is now going to other English-speaking countries. The rabbis of the principal congregations in Johannesburg (Jewish population was 63,620. Cape Town of which Cape Peninsula had 28,000. Chief rabbis and 65 synagogues are affiliated to the Orthodox Federation of Synagogues. A Reform Movement started in 1933 and has 14 affiliated congregations. Also, there are 69 nursery schools, 10 primary schools and 8 high schools. They have an extensive Jewish press and a lot of cultural activities. By 1990 there were 120,000 Jews living in South Africa.
In 1923, there were 300 Jewish elementary schools, the majority teaching in Hebrew, a minority in Yiddish (Hebrew-German Combo).
Jews of Central Europe in the 14th and 15th centuries immigrated to Ukraine and from Poland in the 16th to 17th centuries. Severe massacres happened during the Chmielnicki and the Haidamak uprising in the 17th to 18th centuries.
The Frankist and Hasidic movements originated in the 18th century in Ukraine which was also associated with the early Zionism in the 19th-20th centuries. Jews of Galicia and White Russia had emigrated there.
The Soviet Government promoted Jewish settlement in the Ukraine in the 1920's, however. They used the funds of the American Joint Distribution Committee in the regions of Kalinindorf, Zlatopol, and Stalindorf. By 1930 there were 90,000 Jewish agriculturists there. In January 1918 , a regime of national autonomy was estalished in the Ukraine. Jewish economy and culture suffered under Soviet rule. About half of Soviet Russia's 3 million Jews lived there before WWII. Under Nazi rule, the Jewish people who had not fled to Russia were wiped out by the Germans and Ukrainians from 1941 to 1942. The Jewish population was officially put at 777,126 in 1970 and at 484,129 in 1989.
There were restrictions on them imposed during the 1930's limited the influx (when Germany and Nazism were affecting all countries towards Jews), although many German Jews were able to settle in South Africa. After 1939, however, Jewish immigration was small to nothing. It has increased again in the late 1980's. .jpg%20invasion%20of%20Poland.jpg)
In 1939 when Germany marched into Poland, starting WWII, the Jewish population numbered about 175,000. About 25,000 were deported by the Russians from Lithuania and Latvia in July 1940. The remaining Jews were massacred by the Germans and Lithuanians by 1943. 24,000 Jews were living there in 1959, but by 1989 about half of these had left for Israel, leaving 12,312. Today of 2023 there are 52,300. I presume most have made aliyah to Israel.

Ukraine was the center of anti-Semitism. It was the scene of pogroms in 1905 and 1918 to 1920. Fiddler on the Roof was situated in Ukraine. As the play begins, Tevye, a Jewish milkman, tells of the customs in the little Russian town of Anatevka. It is 1905, and life here is as precarious as a fiddler on the roof, yet, through their traditions, the villagers endure. Anatevka (Ukrainian: Анатевка) is a Ukrainian refugee village that provides food, housing, education, and medical support for refugees resulting from the 2014 Russian invasion and the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine. The village was established in 2015 and currently houses hundreds of families.

Goldfoot 3rd Cousins Meeting For 1st Time
Ian, Myself, and my brother David all three are Goldfoots; meeting at David's home- our 3rd cousin, from the South African branch. Here's the story.
Nathan "Nokhim Avram"Abraham" of Abram Goldfus, Telsiai, Kaunas, Lithuania
b: January 1, 1871, d: July 19, 1912 Portland, Oregon USA
My grandfather that I never knew. Evidently, my father
remembers combing his beard, so he must have grown one, though he was only 41 years 6 months 18 days old when he was killed in a horse and wagon accident when the horse was spooked and threw him out of the wagon and he hit his head and never gained consciousness again. He was taken to St. Vincent's Hospital, the old one. My son is a nurse at the new St. Vincent's Hospital.

She spoke Yiddish.
Our Goldfoot family, found in Telsiai, Lithuania, spelled our surname as Goldfus, which is a Yiddish spelling for Goldfuss, which is German. I found some of us with the latter spelling, too. Jews had been in Lithuania since 1321. In 1495 they were residing in Vilna, Lithuania, Grodno and Kovno. By 1529 they even received a charter guaranteeing freedom of movement and employment. But, in 1495-1502, they were excluded from Lithuania, and between 1566-72, the Jewish badge was introduced and Jews could not give evidence in a courtroom.
Jews settled in Telz at the beginning of the 17th century. From 1623 to 1764, the "Vaad Medinath Lita" was established, and the Telz community was a subject of the "Kahal" of the Keidan district. By 1797 the population of Telz was 2,500, and of them, 1,650 were Jews, which was 66%. Telz Jews suffered from blood libels, one in 1758 and the 2nd in 1827. The accused were released by the court, but the whole ordeal caused all a lot of fear. Estate owners didn't like the Jews and accused them of being competitors in producing and selling alcohol, so in 1825 the nobles asked the Tsar to expel the Jews because they "spread diseases and threaten to rob and to steal..." Our ancestor, Movsha, was a distiller!
Nathan's great grandfather had been alive then, Iosel Josel Symka ben Yankel Goldfus b: 1798 d: December 19, 1878, born and raised in Telz. His wife was Rasha. I have 12 children listed for them.
They were part of Russia from 1795 to 1918. During WWI, 100,000 Jews were expelled or emigrated to the Russian interior. In 1893 there was a cholera epidemic and many poor Jews died. Finally Lithuania became independent and had national autonomy from 1918 to 1924. In 1919 Vilna was lost and became part of Poland. This move weakened the Jews of Lithuania and after 1924, autonomy was restricted to religious matters and the economic position of the Jews deteriorated in the coming years.
I've been able to go back to 1730 when Iones or Jonah Goldfus was born in Telsiai, Kaunas, Lithuania. I don't know who he was married to but had two sons, Abram b: 1752 and Mark b: 1753.

After Charles, their first son was born in Council, they took the train and settled in Portland, Oregon.
My grandmother Hattie"Zlata" came over from "Russia"on May 6, 1903 along with her sisters Jenny and Bessie. She was 17. Bessie was 21 or 20. Jenny must have been about 11 years old. I have not found them in the Ellis Island Port yet. On the Declaration of Intention paper, she said she came here via Hamburg, Germany on the ship Altverten and landed in New York. On the Declaration of Intention of May 17, 1917, at age 31, she states she came from Zuwalta, Russia to Hamburg, Germany on the vessel Altverten { possibly be Altai or Aultman} as that's the only ship I can find on Stephen Morse list and was married. Her grandson David said it might have been the "Antwerpen". She came to New York on the 6th of May 1903. She had black hair and brown eyes and was dark complected. She was only 64 years old when she died. This was written by a clerk in the circuit court.

Great aunt Jenny Criss with my mother, Mildred Goldfoot
She probably lived in Cuprum, Idaho with her sisters, a small mining town close to Council before she married.
Nathan's father was Movsha ben Josel Goldfus b: 1836 in Telsiai. d: November 8, 1878 in Telsiai. So he died when Nathan was 7 years old. This is interesting as my father was named Moses " Moshe" Goldfoot and was a 2nd son with Charles 2 years older. Movsha's wife was Beile (Beila).
Movsha's father was Iosel Josel Symka ben Yankel Goldfus. One of his other sons was Avrohom Abraham Haim Goldfus b: c1820.
Ireland
"A permanent settlement of Jews in Ireland was definitely established in the late fifteenth century. Following their expulsion from Portugal in 1496, some of these Marrano Jews settled on Ireland's south coast. One of them, William Annyas, was elected as mayor of Youghal, County Cork, in 1555, there was also Francis Annyas (Ãnes) a three time Mayor of Youghal in 1569, 1576 and 1581."
In Dublin, I had found Nathan, our grandfather, married to a Lena Goldberg on February 21, 1893. He was listed as a commercial traveler and needed no license. A witness was Leah Goldberg, her mother, b:c1850. Her father was Naftolee Goldberg, b: c1845, a capmaker. She was from someplace in Russia. In June 1893 he was at Londonderry, Ireland, a port city, heading for Quebec, Canada. By June 14, 1893, he was headed for Winnipeg, Canada on a ship, Parisian, listed as single and first arriving on that date in Quebec, Canada. They had his listed as Nathan Goldfort. (Nathan: June 14, 1893 on Parisian ship of Allen line (British 1881-) from Londonderry, Ireland to Winnipeg at age 22. b: 1871.) That marriage didn't last long, about only 4 months. We knew that he had previously been married without any issue, and wanted a family, but that was it. I haven't been able to ever find him living in Canada.
Nathan in 1893 lived at 13 Arbutus Place, SCR.
A researcher told me about this information. I can't remember which one it was but he was born in 1949. Nathan lived at 13 Arbutus Place, South Circular Road, Dublin Ireland in 1893 when he married Lena Goldberg. I found this about the address: (I (not my grandfather) was born in 1949 in a nursing home located just down the street at 102 South Circular Road, Portobello, (now renumbered as no. 18), which house had been the home of the President’s father, the first Chief Rabbi of Ireland, Isaac Herzog, throughout the 1920s. (He later moved the short distance to 33, Bloomfield Avenue for the remaining years of his ministry here before becoming Chief Rabbi of Eretz Israel.) I was accordingly born in the same house where Chaim Herzog spent most of his Dublin childhood and where his gifted brother, the late Ya’acov Herzog, had been born in 1921." Nathan left this addresss, at least 4 months later after February 21, 1893 when he married Lena.
By 1897, 3,088 Jews remained in Telsiai, Lithuania which was (51% of Telsiai's population. ) All would be killed in the Holoscaust of WWII.
Another researcher sent me this piece. "-He indicated in the 1910 census that he had arrived in the U.S. in 1896. So presumably, he was in Canada from 1893 to 1896. As the ship's arrival indicated that he was on his way to Winnipeg, we may assume that he was either there or in one of the other Canadian prairie cities with a Jewish population. Winnipeg has city directories for 1890 and 1897, but nothing in-between. I have access to the Canadian records on ancestry, but could not find him. My great-grandmother's brothers were in Alberta at that time. It was truly the wild west in those days. " 1910 would be the last census for him as he died on July 19, 1912 in Portland, Oregon.
Nathan's 1st cousin was LOUIS Yehudah Leib ben "Hyman-"Louis Goldfus", b: November 19, 1867 in Telsiai, d: March 18, 1955 in Capetown, South Africa, who was the grandfather of Ian Goldfoot. Louis's father was Avrohom Abraham Haim Goldfus b: abt 1820 in Telsiai.
Avrohom (Abraham) Haim Goldfus b: c1820 seems to be a common ancestor for both myself and my brother and Ian Goldfoot and his sister, Denise. David and I are his great grandniece and great grandnephew; and Ian Goldfoot and sister Denise are his great grandson and great granddaughter.
David Goldfoot, son of Maurice and Ian Goldfoot, son of Solomon: 3rd cousins
Mary died and Solomon remarried in 1943 to Jenny "Genundel"bat Yosef Shmuel Frankel. They had a daughter, Denise Goldfoot.
It seems that many Jewish Lithuanians made their way to England and then Dublin and onto South Africa. When I emigrated to Israel, I found that the education department had been developed by South Africans who were then the heads of departments. They must have arrived earlier than we Americans. Abba Eban certainly was one. 50,000 Jews still live in Johannesburg, South Africa.
A cousin I had learned about who is known to Ian Goldfoot is Stanley Goldfoot b: 1914 in South Africa. He is also our 3rd cousin through genealogy. Stanley was the Chief of Intelligence for the Stern Group (called gang by the British) in Palestine. I met him while living in Israel from 1980-end of 1985. We met at the KING DAVID HOTEL in Jerusalem. I asked how I would know him and he replied, "Don't worry. I'll know you." I've added him on the genealogy tree below. Stanley is Ian's 2nd cousin. Since then, we met at his home in Jerusalem.
Another 3rd cousin I have contacted with is also from South Africa and is a Gochin who were from Papile, Lithuania. His ancestor had married a Goldfoot lady.
One other I want to mention is one of 2 heads of the Halpern & Branches group on FTDNA. I found out that we are connected to Rabbi Samson Wertheimer b: 1658 Worms, Germany, d: 1724 Vienna, Austria He in turn was known to connect to RASHI b: 1040 Troyes, France d: 1105 Troyes, France, and he was known to connect to King David of Israel b: 1010 BCE-d: 970 BCE

Through genealogy using this very blog and through DNA, David and I finally met our 3rd cousin, Ian. It just happened that the two men were living in the same state. What was nice was that we met on a Friday for a Shabbat dinner. Through DNA, we find that Ian and David are 2nd cousins but I'm a 3rd cousin, which we are according to our genealogy. Ian and David share 174.29451cMs over 29 segments. They also share their Y haplogroup line of Q-M242. Ian and one of David's sons share 113.4722cMs over 20 segments. They are listed as 3rd cousins. Information given doesn't show details of how many times removed one is. This son and Ian should be 3rd cousins once removed. Ian and I share 143.29375cMs over 23 segments. We are 3rd cousins. Ian and my son, Steve, of course are 3rd cousins once removed and share 110.98878cMs over 18 segments. Ian and Steve's wife are 5th cousins and share 31.07031cMs over 12 segments.
I have a 1st cousin, Nate Goldfoot. His wife tested and also matches Ian as a 5th cousin sharing 66.54338cMs over 22 segments. I could go on and on with relatives matching Ian.

All this and Nathan's grave in Hebrew says that his father was Chaim Itzak Goldfus. I had found a Chaim but none with a middle name. We had known Nathan to have no middle name. Since our grandmother is the one who ordered the headstone, I presume she knew something, but haven't been able to find a record according to this piece of information. One researcher thought that the name, "Abraham," was significant to connect the South African with us, and lo and behold, Nathan's middle child, the one who died as an infant, was Abraham. With DNA, we do know we are connected.
